BREAKFAST/LUNCH INFORMATION:
*You are always welcome to come eat lunch with us at any time! Our lunch time is 12:20-12:50. If you would like to buy lunch in the cafeteria, please pre-order your lunch choice by sending in a note with your child.

*Parent/grandparents are not allowed to bring in lunch from outside restaurants (McDonald’s, etc) for you and your child at lunch time. You can bring you food from home or order a lunch from the cafeteria.
*Lunch costs $2.10 a day. You must send the money weekly ($10.50/week) or daily. Your child’s homework folder (OTIS) will have a zipper pocket for money.
*Breakfast cost $1.25.
*Ice cream costs 75 cents and may be purchased on WEDNESDAY ONLY.
*Additional items, such as chips, crackers, etc. may be purchased on FRIDAYS ONLY. Please make sure you send extra money if you wish for your child to purchase those items. The cafeteria will send home a list of extra items and their prices or you can visit the ABSS website at abss.k12.nc.us for cafeteria menu prices. Click on the Parent link and Child Nutrition.
*The cafeteria will not allow any child to “charge” their lunch at any time. PLEASE make every effort to make sure that your child has lunch money on a regular basis.
*It is your responsibility to keep up with how much lunch money you have sent to school. If you write us a note, we will check to see how much money you have in your account and send you a note.
*Please label your child’s lunchbox. Please do not send sodas.

ABSENCES AND TARDIES:  if your child is absent from school, you should send a note to school the following day stating the reason for his/her absence. After 3 days, all absences without a note will be marked unexcused If you are going on a family trip where your child will miss school and you want the absence to be excused, you must write a note to the principal (Mrs. Rebecca Royal) PRIOR to your trip requesting that it will be excused. You must state in your note how your trip will be educational and your child will be asked to keep a journal of their activities including what they learned on their trip.
*If your child arrives after 7:50 in the morning, you must sign your child in at the office. Unless you are paying for the before school program, please do not drop of your child before 7:30. If your child accumulates more than 3 unexcused morning tardies, they will be required to stay in afterschool detention for one afternoon. You will be notified if your child is required to stay for detention.

BUS AND CAR RIDER NUMBERS: Please help your child remember his/her car rider and/or bus number. If your child is a car rider and doesn’t already have a number, let me know and we will get you a car rider number. You can inquire about your child’s bus number at Open House.

DISMISSAL: Dismissal begins at 2:40. If there is any change in the way your child leaves school (temporary or permanent), please send a WRITTEN NOTE to let us know about the change. Without written notification, we will have to send your child home with his/her usual way. (We are not allowed to accept a verbal message from your child). Please make every effort to be as consistent as possible with the way in witch your child goes home from school.

CANDY AND TOYS:  Please do not allow your child to bring toys or candy to school unless it has been requested.

HOMEWORK: Each child will have an OTIS (Organize This Important Stuff) notebook. These notebooks will contain homework assignments, reading book and log, daily behavior chart, and parent information. These notebooks will be sent home Monday-Friday. Each night, please complete your child’s homework with them and have them read the book in their OTIS. Take note of their behavior chart and discuss any concerns with them. This daily communication is meant to provide parents with a link to what your child is learning at school.

DISCIPLINE: Parent involvement is important in supporting positive behavior. Acceptable behavior will be rewarded. Behavior modification techniques are used to correct inappropriate behavior. We will be using a behavior chart that consists or colored cards (green, yellow, blue, then red) and warnings. Every day your child will start with a green card and 2 warnings. If unacceptable behavior is seen and not corrected after 2 warnings, your child will turn their card to yellow. Once on yellow, students will have 2 more warnings before being required to turn their card to blue. Students who are on blue will not receive any warnings. Students with red cards will be sent to the office to speak with an administrator. Offenses that require immediate office referrals include bullying, causing bodily harm to others, and stealing. Each day your child will record their behavior on the chart in their homework folder indicating what color they were on that day; whether it was green, yellow, blue, or red. Yellow, blue, and red days will have an explanation filled out inside the box for that day. Please discuss the area(s) with your child and initial the chart.
I also give students the opportunity to turn back their card through good behavior. For example, if a student is on yellow, but shows improvement (or does not get any more warnings), they may be able to turn their card back to green. Students on blue or red cards will not be given the opportunity to turn back to yellow or green.
We are looking forward to working with you and your child. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at school (563-6905) or by email patricia_rayluz@abss.k12.nc.us. Thank you!

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Patty Luz and Shawn Wilson

Reading Log & Books
Please be sure to read nightly with your child & record it on the reading log (on back of behavior calendar in OTIS). Note: this year you need to record the amount of time spent reading. We send home books on Tuesdays & Thursdays, and your child may read a library book or book from home for the other nights. Please ensure that the book is at an appropriate level for your child: not too easy or difficult. Also, following reading, discuss the book with your child (characters, setting, problem/solution, beginning, middle, end). This will greatly improve comprehension skills and allow your child to get more meaning from reading. Also, please be sure to return all books!

Beginning of the year "stuff"
Please remember to sign & return all emergency forms, the ABSS Handbook (back page), and the video/photo consent form. Also, don't forget to send in $6.00 for Scholastic News.
Snacks & lunches
Please keep snacks & lunches simple!  We only have about 5 minutes for snack & 30 minutes for lunch, so do not send  in "too much" food & snacks at lunch because kids do not eat their "main" lunch.  Also, alot of food gets wasted & thrown out.  Also, no soda is allowed in school.  Please remember to keep snacks & lunches simple & as healthy as possible.
Welcome to Grade 1! 2011-2012
Hi, and welcome to Grade 1! We hope you enjoyed your summer, and now we are looking forward to a great school year.
Just a few things:  Please check your child's OTIS daily.  Homework is usually given Monday-Thuirsday. Also, please sign the behavior calendar, and discuss any areas of concern with yor child. Please place any
$ or notes in the pencil pouch. Your child is also expected to read 5 out of 7 nights, and note this on the Reading Log.

We need a note if your child is going home a different way than usual- we cannot accept your child's "word" that they need to go home a different way. If a change needs to be made during the school day, please call the office, & they will let us know.

Lunches: Our lunch is from 12:20-12:50. You are welcome to eat lunch with your child, but fast food is not to be brought in for lunch. Sorry- no happy meals!!! If you would like to buy a school lunch, please give us your order before 8:30, so we can let the cafeteria staff know.

Snack- We have a quick (5min) morning snack. Please check the snack calendar & make note of your snack day. If you do not send in snack, the class will most likely not have a snack on that day. You are always welcome to send in your snack in advance. Please make sure the snacks are healthy- string cheese, yogurt/pudding, granola/nutrigrain bars, crackers, ... are all good choices. Juice boxes also work best. We also ask that you send in any necessary utensils needed for your snack- spoons, cups,.... Thanks!
